Mixed-Use Urban Infill Project: Interior Design IV

Mixed-Use Urban In-Fill Project
Interior Design IV (Senior year)
In this 6-credit class, each student individually worked on a semester-long project. Our task was to develop a mixed-use urban in-fill project for a site located near our campus in downtown Lynchburg. Initially, we conducted research to downtown to identify its needs and determine the appropriate direction for our project. With the freedom to choose the use of the designated lot, each student utilized their research findings to decide on the building's composition.ย

During my research, I discovered that the people of Lynchburg are always seeking entertainment and dining opportunities. To address this, I designed the first two floors of my building to function as a versatile restaurant space, capable of transforming into a dance floor or event venue after restaurant hours. Additionally, considering the city's housing shortage, I incorporated apartments on the upper floors, complete with amenities such as gym and rooftop access.ย Floor 3 features aย bookstore/Cafe, and a salon, with the flexibility for these spaces to be repurposed for other uses. Other components of the building include storage lockers, two mechanical rooms, an IT closet, and a loading dock. The following work walks through each phase to see how my vision came to life. A final poster presentation is the last picture seen on this page.ย

Site Location:ย
1020, 1022ย Main St,
Lynchburg, VA 24501
Programming Work (Adjacency Matrix, Stacking Plan, Blocking Layout)
This phase of the project involved lots of brainstorming to find theย primary and secondary adjacencies indicating where each room should go. From there I was able to form a blocking plan within the parameters of the lot. This phase helped the direction of the project, to tweak and change things before making floor plans.ย
Concept Sketches
These sketches along with many not seen were to give an idea of how a few featured spaces would appear.ย One of my main focuses was on the first and second floors of the building, the Western BBQ restaurant. The first photo shows the second floor looking down, and the second is of the first floor looking up through the atrium that I included in my design. The third displays the rooftop, and the fourth a salon.ย
Final Floor Plans
Each floor is as follows and includes Sub-basement: Mechanical room, Loading dock, Basement: Mechanical room cont., Storage, restaurant breakroom, Floor 1: BBQ restaurant, Floor 2: BBQ restaurant, Floor 3: Bookstore/Cafe, Hair Salon, Floor 4:ย  Two-Bedroom Apartments, apartment gym, Floor 5-7: One and Two-Bedroom Apartments, Rooftop: Lounge area, Restaurant rooftop bar.ย
Floor Plan & Life Safety Plan Sheets
These photos show each revised and final floor plan organized onto 24"x36" Sheets. Also seen are the life safety plans, and an elevation for the reflected ceiling plan.ย
Renderings
As this project was semester-long, we had enough time to focus on one part of the building to 3-D Model and render. My chosen space was the restaurant, so that I would be able to put the space into perspective with the dining area being able to be converted into a dance floor. I also wanted to show how this space is seen with the atrium. The overall design look was to create a rustic, yet modern take to a country and western environment. Each rendering was modeled with SketchUp and rendered through Lumion. The final touches were completed with Photoshop.ย
